Traditional education programs are failing to keep pace with modern technology. Academia struggles to produce developers who are truly prepared for the ever-changing responsibilities of a professional programmer, and its costs are often prohibitive. But by pooling inspiration from different educational methods and teaching techniques that have existed for thousands of years, modern apprenticeships for software craftsmanship have proven to be the best way to get started on the path toward mastery in the software industry.

In this talk, Paul Pagel will outline what a modern apprenticeship for software craftsmanship looks like, and how it can create a symbiotic relationship between education and business by giving the skills and tools to those who are motivated to succeed.

Biography: Paul Pagel

Paul Pagel co-founded 8th Light in 2006, and has been a driving force in the software craftsmanship movement ever since. He organized the first Software Craftsmanship Summit in 2008, and later contributed to the Manifesto for Software Craftsmanship. As 8th Light's CEO, Paul has helped the company grow to employ more than 50 software craftsmen spread across two continents, all having graduated from 8th Light's intensive apprenticeship program that he helped design.

Paul has given presentations on software craftsmanship and modern apprenticeships at numerous conferences, and has personally mentored six different apprentices. He is currently enrolled in the Executive Masters of Business program at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.
